You know the saying, “you are what you eat”?  The further I adventure in life, the more I realize this is True on pretty much ALL levels.  What I’m saying is: Spiritually, emotionally, physically, mentally, and relationally we become who we spend time with, the types of images we gaze upon, the ways of behaving we regularly see and hear, and so on.  As much as I like to buy into the American myth of rugged individualism, truthfully we’re copycats … and it’s NOT a bad thing!

I think it’s great because it reveals to us how interconnected we are, highlights the importance of relationships, and frees us to give greater grace to others (and ourselves), as it opens our eyes to just how deeply we’re influenced by family, coworkers, news, social media, and so on, Additionally, realizing we’re created to mimic allows us to be mindful about what kind of vibes we take in via who we spend time with, what we watch, the music we listen to, the words we read, where we go, and so on.

I see this in reflecting on my own life, as when I had a significant “diet” of self-centered people, violent news images, fearful and divisive messages from leaders, and such, I couldn’t help but be selfish, lacking in kindness, anxious, and exclusionary of people unlike me.  Conversely, though, being married to the kindest person since Jesus, having an inspiring circle of family and friends, and choosing to “feast” upon beauty and goodness has made a world of difference!  With that in mind, I invite us to together practice shifting our “diets” toward Love, joy, peace, and unity.  What’s a small and sustainable way this resonates with you today?
