Isn’t Autumn grand?  I love the explosion of colors.  There’s this red tree in front of my house, with fallen leaves strewn all around that blows my mind with its beauty.  What is more, isn’t there something enlivening about chilly mornings transforming into crisply comfortable days?  I gotta say, the fall rains are refreshing and invigorating, and with the heat of summer gone it seems as if birds and other animals are more out and about.  It occurs to me the Fall season is a celebration of reality in its totality: Life and death, hot and cold, all the colors, wet and dry, sunny and cloudy, joy and sorrow, and so on.  With that in mind, today I invite you to practice celebrating life in all its messy amazingness.

To help aid you in this endeavor, allow me to share “Wild Geese” by Mary Oliver with you.  Let her words wash over and into you:

You do not have to be good.

You do not have to walk on your knees

for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.

You only have to let the soft animal of your body

love what it loves.

Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.

Meanwhile the world goes on.

Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain

are moving across the landscapes,

over the prairies and the deep trees,

the mountains and the rivers.

Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,

are heading home again.

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,

the world offers itself to your imagination,

calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting —

over and over announcing your place

in the family of things.
