Lisa and I had a “moment” as she got home for dinner the other day. A confused and frustrated, “what the heck just happened”, type of deal. Knowing she’d been gone most of the day, done all the grocery shopping, and was running significantly later than she’d planned, I was all set to be her “hero” by rallying the troops to bring all the groceries in; so she could get settled and relaxed as quickly as possible.

What I didn’t know, was her day had been tumultuous. Lisa had felt pulled in multiple directions. Even worse—in my rush to help—I ended up breaking open a new, Costco-sized bottle of laundry detergent on the garage floor, which led me into a little shame and stress tsunami. As you might imagine, her stress “clouds” meeting my stress clouds led to a stress blizzard!

In our interactions with others, we each arrive carrying the “baggage”—good, bad, and neutral—of our day, and beyond.

Fortunately, with not much in the way of hurt feelings, we were able to step-back, talk, understand where each of us was coming from, and come together. A huge help here was that we had words to put to what happened: Missing Each Other. “Missing each other”, in this regard, captures how sometimes in relationships people move toward each other with good intentions, but given the momentum of their current trajectories, they end up “flying by” one another instead of connecting with each other. They miss, instead of meet one another. Know what I mean?

I don’t know about you, but moments like these don’t feel good at all! At times, I’ve gotten bent around the axel, aggravated, and pointed fingers after/during such episodes. Yet, there was literally no fault in what happened, because sometimes in life things just go awry—and the best thing we can do is name it, learn from it, and let it go. No blame, no shame, only grace, understanding, and love!

Hugs & Love,

Lang
