Friends, I’ve got a special New Years treat for you! Jason Lewis is the primary caretaker for his mom and a personal trainer specializing in helping the senior population, so offered to write a blog on senior wellbeing. Not only do I think what he has to offer is helpful to seniors, I think it’s super applicable to us all! Enjoy …

As we age, self-care becomes essential by the day. While father time will take its course, it’s important for you to be on top of your health and take steps to remain healthy, both mentally and physically.

The first step is to be honest with yourself. No one knows your body and mind as well as you do. Whether it be muscle pain, nausea, disorientation, balance issues, etc. it’s important to take stock of your current health standing and then move towards taking steps to make it better.

Now, let’s look at some useful activities you can incorporate into your everyday routine for improving your quality of life:

Physical Activities

According to research, seniors should indulge in moderate physical activity for at least 2.5 hours per week. Depending on your preference, choose to exercise for at least 30 minutes each day or do longer sessions every alternate day. Here are some activities you should consider partaking in:
Walking: One of the simplest aerobic exercises you can indulge in which will lead to better stamina, improved cardiovascular health, and provide you some much-needed Vitamin-D from the sun. Additionally, when it comes to walking, you are in full control, choose the time and pace which is right for you.

Yoga: It is considered one of the best holistic exercises for seniors. Yoga involves slow controlled movements of all major muscle groups of your body leading to greater mobility, improved balance, and prevention of falls. Additionally, yoga creates better posture, which helps to alleviate muscle and joint aches especially in the knees and lower back.

You can opt to do yoga from the comfort of your home, but to reap all the benefits it’s best to join a class or hire an experienced instructor who can work with you and create the best exercise regime.

Resistance Band Workouts: When it comes to exercising isolated parts of the body such as arms, legs, back, etc., resistance bands are the go-to option. They are easy to use and provide enough tension to mimic lifting a low-weight dumbbell while doing exercises such as bicep curls, leg press, etc. Additionally, they are low-cost, easily available, and make for a great home workout.

Mental Activities

Along with its physical benefits, yoga is a great exercise for the mind. Learning to control your breathing is a core part of the activity, providing a sense of calm, mindfulness, and reducing stress. Additionally, practicing yoga in a group along with friends and peers helps you remain socially active, reducing the feelings of isolation.

As reported by Aegis Living, starting a hobby or taking on challenging tasks can help improve memory function, increase concentration levels and help one remain sharp. And a notable challenge any senior can take is converting their hobby into a business. While it may sound difficult at first, it is incredibly easy and rewarding. Moreover, it allows you to use the skills you’ve developed over the years and dedicate your time to something you love doing. Here are some popular options to explore:

Blogger: Select a niche and start your own blog. If you amass a strong following of readers, you can monetize it and earn money from each visit you receive to your website. Similarly, you can apply to write for other websites and use your experience to earn a healthy amount for your contributions.

Baker: Who doesn’t love a good pastry? Currently, there is a high demand for organic homemade food in the market which you can bank on. Such businesses have a high chance of growing organically as long as you provide exceptional customer service and food that rattles their taste buds.
Tuition Teacher: If you’re an expert in a subject or two and love teaching, consider starting tuition classes catering to kids in your neighborhood. You can start with your own family and then reach out to other parents. As you build a reputation, your clientele will increase.

Regardless of your business choice, you’ll need to put in some time towards promoting it on social media, to garner eyeballs and create awareness. Additionally, to distinguish your product, it’s a good idea to create attractive packaging. If you don’t have the time to handle all these activities yourself, consider hiring freelancers to do the job for you. Similarly, you can outsource your hiring responsibilities to a recruiter and let them find the best people for you.

Incorporating these activities into your everyday routine will make you feel energetic, improve your physical conditioning, and have a healthy mind, allowing you to remain independent and enjoy all the things you love doing.

… Great stuff! Thank you, Jason, for all these insights, tips, and resources. Here’s to 2022 being a fabulous year!

Hugs & Love,

Lang
